食べログラーメン TOKYO 百名店2023
Tabelog, Japan’s most credible restaurant-ranking site, once again gave 100 shops in Tokyo the coveted Hyakumeiten award. If you see the plaque, poster, or sticker in a shop you can be assured that this is one hardcore ramen hunters have fallen in love with.
Although the list is not a ranking, I listed the shops in order of their overall Tabelog score out of five. Anything over a 3.5 is considered quality and anything over a 4.0 is considered top-class. Only one shop in Japan is above 4.0, but these numbers are constantly evolving so you should take everything with a grain of salt.
In 2023, Tabelog changed things up. There are now four areas, each with its own hyakumeiten. Tokyo, Osaka, East Japan, and West Japan all have 100 for a total of 400 ramen shops. Happy hunting you ramen lovers!

This was the first year where I had already eaten at all 100 shops before the list came out. I braved the insane lines of shops like Hotate Biyori and Sakurajosui Funakoshi. I trekked into the wilderness of Hachioji for Kaede. I stumbled upon “there is ramen” before there was any hype (they were also awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand this year). Ah . . . who am I kidding . . . I just made sure I had visited all of the top-ranked shops in advance and spent a lot of free time eating ramen. I almost had the same for East Japan, but I got the flu and had to cancel a road trip to a famous shop in Gunma a few days before the 2023 list was released. When the list came out I was at 99 out of 100. Osaka and West Japan are another story. Hopefully, I can spend some time on the road in early 2024.
I identify as a ramen hunter, a word one of us coined for ramen-obsessed foodies with a desire to travel as far as we can to try different shops. Raota (ラーオタ) is a combination of ramen and otaku (Japanese culture nerd) but this is technically for people who ONLY want to eat ramen and scoff at the idea of something like sushi or pizza. Are you a ramen hunter? A raota? A Jirorian? We welcome you!
