As always, a solid list in Tokyo. Tokyo is, and has always been, the epicenter of great ramen in Japan. It is a mixing pot of styles with something for everyone. This list has a lack of certain styles like iekei (家系ラーメン), but Kanagawa, just a short train ride away, has its own list with many top shops mentioned. I’ve been to all but one shop on this list, the elusive E-Chan Shokudo, which opens at six am and is often done by eight. Suffice to say, I am not a morning person.

By my count, there are only five new shops on the 2025 list. In the past, it was often closer to 20, but that just shows that the shops here have stood the test of time. Personally, the five new shops are all top of their game. Check them out for yourself!

Keep in mind that though these shops are technically listed in order of their Tabelog ranking, this is in constant flux, and the bottom half all hover around 3.77. Personally, I try to visit any shop that is above a 3.60. Tabelog has a unique ranking system where users with more reviews warrant a higher “value” for their scores. Because of this, hardcore foodies in Japan take their rankings a bit seriously. Whereas something like Google reviews are rife with perfect 5-star reviews, a Tabelog score rarely creeps above a 4.0.

I’ll update this list every year. For the recent best of the best, click here.
