杉田家

If you follow Ramen Adventures posting in real-time, you’ll notice that I’ve been going heavy on Yokohama-style Iekei (家系) ramen lately. I made it a goal in 2021 to visit all of the famous shops on the Tabelog Top 100 Hyakumeiten (百名店) across Japan, a list that includes many Iekei shops in Kanagawa Prefecture. Sugitaya opened in 1999 as one of the original Yoshimuraya’s direct disciples.

Shin-Sugita Station is located close to the Mitsui Outlet Park Yokohama Bayside and Yokohama Bayside Marina. If you like shopping and boats, this is your place. I’m more into the latter. If you are as well, hit me up on my meetup.com group for a boat ride in the area. We can cruise the canals of Yokohama and have a bowl of ramen after.

The ticket machine seems to have fewer choices than other Iekei shops, but that might just be a choice of button placement. Many shops will have four choices for normal, four choices for large, and four choices for XL noodles portions when in reality all of that could have been decided without the extra buttons. Go for the upper-left normal-sized bowl (並ラーメン) and maybe some toppings if you are into that. There’s also a wafu (和風新杉田ラーメン) Japanese-style bowl on the menu. The normal soup is mixed with a bit of Japanese dashi and topped with shaved bonito flakes, a shiso leaf, and some pickled plum. I’m interested and will try this one next time.

I found Sugitaya’s flavor to be less intense than other Iekei shops, but that might have been because after a day driving boats on the water, I was a bit dehydrated and my taste buds were out of whack. Either way, I probably should have loaded this one up with cabbage, wakame, and negi toppings for some extra green in my diet.

Toppings on the counter are your standard Iekei fare. A few kinds of garlic including green grated garlic, ginger, hot sauce, and vinegar. Flavor it up!
