麺処 鶏谷

Rich chicken ramen, made with craft soy sauce and choice ingredients is the draw at Toritani in Kyoto. The shop is praised by magazines, internet rankings, and recommended by word-of-mouth ramen fans. It’s always a game of catch-up in Kyoto; there are more and more quality ramen shops each time I visit.

First, though, an exhibition form Hiroshi Sugimoto, one of my favorite Japanese artists.

I used to shy away from Kyoto. The crowds are rough, the public transportation abysmal, and the prices high. Recently, with the lack of tourism, and a friend who has a bicycle to lend me when I visit, Kyoto is a bit of a dream destination. This is also my chance to hit all the famous ramen shops.

Toritani, meaning chicken valley, focuses on chicken. This style of ramen is a big trend these days. High-quality ingredients in a refreshing bowl.

I went with the lighter torisoba, but there is also an aged version (熟成鶏そば) that looks richer. The chicken here is a local prestige brand called Kyoaka Jidori (京赤地どり). Great bowl in a sea of great bowls. A must-hit for the ramen hunters out there. Casual fans can play it by ear, as this shop might not be convenient for you if you are staying near Gion like more tourists.

The menu has many limited bowls as well as other chicken dishes. Next door is a yakitori shop, and it seems like you can order things from one shop and eat it at the other. I was on a ramen shop crawl, so there wasn’t room in my stomach for extras, but this might be a nice spot to head to for drinks, yakitori, and shine ramen.
