ラーメン専門店 なるとや

Narutoya in the middle-ish of Nagoya City has been a fan favorite since 2005. Sakae is low-key a super cool part of town. The master comes from Josui, a legendary Nagoya-based shop that has managed to open overseas. Josui is known for its unique take on creamy chicken ramen.

Their signature Narutoya ramen comes with bonus toppings, so I just went with the standard egg-in bowl. I usually avoid the options with all the extras, as I’ve been stuck with four slices of chashu that I wasn’t feeling in the past. Also, I figure I save about $1000 a year by skipping the extra charge for extra toppings. Weird flex, I know.

Narutoya is one of the Hyakumeiten, a list of 300 top shops across Japan. I made it a minor goal in 2022 to visit as many as I could. As of writing this, I have 295/300 crushed. By the way, the new list comes out sometime in November, so I have to reevaluate my ramen adventures every year. And no, I don’t visit all 300 in a single calendar year.

The soup at Narutoya is spiked with heavy seafood flavors. It’s kind of the perfect bowl of shio ramen. For me, at least, I love when shio ramen tastes like some version of chicken soup elevated with umami and aroma oils. I’m telling you, people, just add some hondashi to your soups for an instant upgrade.

In the end, the chashu was excellent and I regret not getting the special bowl. Live and learn! FYI, Narutoya has a second branch in Osu, which is closer to the main Nagoya Station, but not by much.
