Onisoba (the demon’s noodles) serves a “premium” bowl of lobster bisque ramen in the heart of Shibuya. There are so many red flags here.

Calling your ramen “premium” seems kind of pretentious. Anything in the heart of Shibuya is likely low quality. The shop boasts of winning a ramen award in America. The shop was started by a Japanese comedian. None of these things point to good ramen. Or do they?

At only 1200 yen for a bowl of ramen made with Japanese spiny lobster, I gotta try. If this one was more, like in the 3000 yen range, I probably would have been a bit wary. It reminds me of another shop serving lobster ramen, Ebimaru. Their bowl without the whole lobster is normally priced, but their “premium” bowl isn’t. Over at that shop, the latter bowl was aimed at tourists. I’ve been tricked with overpriced ramen before!

A half ise ebi on top is impressive. These . . . ahem . . . premium shellfish are often served on gourmet menus or at ryokan inns near beachside towns across Japan. Quite tasty and quite expensive. In this regard, 1200 yen is a steal.

The whole bowl was very tasty. Basically a lobster bisque with thick noodles. I’d slurp it again! How cool is it that a Japanese comedian took his love of ramen and made it his day job? And the location in the heart of Shibuya is convenient for locals and tourists alike. Where else can you try ise ebi for such a nice price? Winning an award is just the icing on the cake!

The shop was started by HEY! TakuChan (HEY!たくちゃん), a Japanese television talent and comedian. His visit to the Ninth Avenue International Food Festival was actually crowdfunded here in Japan. They raised around $15,000 to organize a trip to NYC. How cool is that?
