麺と心 7

Creamy, white soups are usually the realm of chicken-based tori paitan or pork-based tonkotsu. Just south of Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo, there’s a shop doing a third, less common style with fish bones. Mantokokoro Seven uses a soup made with 99% fish. Noodles are made in-house. The ramen is topped with seared sea bream. It was a very interesting bowl.

Tragically, the shop’s founder Masahiro Igawa (井川 真宏さん) passed away in a motorcycle accident in August of 2022. Since then his company, Warm Heart, has gone through a restructuring, meaning some of the shops are temporarily or permanently closed.

Mentokokoro translates to noodles and heart. Seven refers to their seven kodawari points. In true Osaka fashion, this isn’t some list of particular ingredients sourced from some specialty suppliers.

  1. Make customers happy
  2. Carefully sourced ingredients
  3. Safety and hygiene
  4. Great water
  5. Handmade noodles
  6. Delicious seafood
  7. Warm heart

Mentokokoro cooks fish bones until the soup is creamy and white. It is finished with dried sardines and topped with more fish. The ramen was popular with ramen nerds and garnered a spot on the West Japan Top 100 list.

Mentokokoro Seven was run by the late Igawa-san (井川さん) along with Junk Story (らーめんstyle JUNK STORY) and Hirudora (辛口肉ソバ ひるドラ) as part of the Warm Heart group. After he passed in 2022, the shop shut down. Operations are now overseen by Takahiro Matsumura (松村 貴大) from the famous Osaka-based UNCHI ramen group. It appears that Mentokokoro 7 hasn’t reopened (this is written in May 2023) but has plans sometime in 2023.
