壱発ラーメン 八王子本店

Ippatsu Ramen was on my list for a while. Even though it has fairly high marks when it comes to internet rankings, it was the visual that got me. Porky soup topped with slimy, shredded Japanese yams, seven slices of chashu, and a seaweed heart. Who can resist?

Nagaimo (長芋) translates to mountain yam, Japanese yam, or Chinese yam depending on who you ask. It can be eaten raw (it’s very nice with a little soy sauce and wasabi), fried, or grated in multiple ways. This tuber is full of healthful fiber and a rather neutral umami flavor. The only drawback for some is the viscous, slimy nature of the root. You can’t eat around this topping, especially when it makes its way into soups. Quite rare in the ramen world, but grated nagaimo is normal with soba noodles.

In Japan, slimy means healthy. The bowl here had some wakame, nori, and mekabu (めかぶ) as well. All different kinds of seaweed. All different kinds of umami.

I really recommend the grated nagaimo. Look for toro (とろ) on the menu. It’s short for tororo (とろろ) which kind of translates into gooey or slimy. If that’s not your thing the spicy green onion topping looked decent.

The menu is massive, but luckily they have photos to go with the goods. And the shop is just around the corner from Motsuke, so you can have a proper ramen adventure out in Hachioji is that’s your thing.
