ほっこり中華そばもつけ

Motsuke is one of Tokyo’s top shops, and it’s way out in Hachioji. Better have some free time if you want to try the special shoyu or tantanmen.

The shop is less than 10 minutes walk from Hachioji Station, so I guess it isn’t that much of a trek. And if the 40 minutes train from Shinjuku to Hachioji is too much, you can save eight minutes by taking the rapid express, though it will cost you and extra 700 yen.

Save the 700 yen and put it towards some tasty ramen.

Although many people say the chukasoba is the top bowl, I was shoyu-ed out this day. Japanese-style tantanmen for the win. Motsuke also has tsukemen and some rice bowls on the menu.

The shop uses all-natural ingredients for its ramen.

I might not be the best judge of these Japanese-style tantanmens. I say that because I seem to enjoy them 99% of the time. Motsuke was no exception. The underlying soup was tinged with low-level heat and a touch of numbing spices. Japanese tantanmen is often ma-ra-light, but the deep soup ties everything together. In contrast, many Chinese-style dandanmien has a simple soup and much more complex spices for a heavier ma-ra numbing-spicy flavore.

Expect a short wait. I saw something for the first time at Motsuke. The gentleman in front of me bought two bowls so he could try the tantanmen and shoyu. The staff told him he would have to eat one bowl, then get back in line for the second. He gladly did so.
