Tsuki Cafe on Rishiri Island, Hokkaido

Tsuki Cafe

There’s not a lot to do on Japan’s northern island of Rishi. Hike, cycle around and look at the ocean. Restaurants are few and far between. One of the most jumping spots is actually the ferry terminal, where you can sit down for a bowl of ramen and watch the waves.

This shop was a recommendation of a friend in Sapporo. The connection is a strange one; coffee.

Smooch Coffee is a Santa Cruiz, California coffee shop with a history going back to the 70s. For some reason, they have a coffee stand in Sapporo. Our friend in Sapporo runs it, and he sends beans up to his buddy Ogata-san in Rishi. Small world.

Tsuki Cafe has a variety of options. Curry, rice bowls, and ramen. The ramen is tonkotsu based and comes in a saba mackerel and miso finish.

Lovely bowl in a lovely location. Of course, noodles are sourced from Hokkaido.

Honestly, this is a great place to chill out if the weather turns for the worse. The island gets pelted with rain constantly, and there are almost no cafes to hang out at. Hipsters rejoice!

As of writing, they may be closed. Please check the internet for updates.
