Bonito Soup Noodle RAIK

January 1st to 3rd and Japan turns into a ghost town. It’s one of three official holiday weeks in the country along with Obon in August and Golden Week in May. For the New Years holiday people stay home and shops tend to close. Tourists to Japan know that the first week of the year can be rough. Luckily, some ramen shops are open for their customers. To make matters even better, most of these shops do special celebration bowls. Case in point, this wagyu bonito ramen from RAIK.

I live close to RAIK. Arriving as number 12 on the second day of the 2021st year I only had to wait an hour or so. Only an hour. Yeah, I got there 30 minutes before opening, and the little six-seater shop had a bit of a line.

1500 yen is a pricey point for ramen, but it all makes sense when you look at the ingredients. Wagyu bone soup blended with bonito dashi. Wagyu oil. Duck, Iwachu (岩中) pork, and more wagyu chashu.

And a little lucky New Years’ slice of naruto fish cake.

Always a fun tradition to slurp a bowl here in the new year. As a rule, I stay home during those three holiday weeks in Japan, drinking whiskey and watching movies, so a quick cycle over for lunch is a special treat. The year before, in 2020, they did a fugu ramen. Also tons of fun.

See you next year!
