鳥そば 真屋

Makotoya is a lunch-only toripaitan shop in Gifu Prefecture. I arrived early expecting a massive line, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought. The ramen, on the other hand, was just as good as I expected. Rough toripaitan is perhaps the most underrated style of ramen.

Torisoba (鳥そば) and various rice bowl sets. You can also get a beer for 600 yen, but the menu specifically says only one per person. I’m on a motorcycle adventure, so no breakfast brew for me.

I always love when the ticket machine has some stickers on it. Many ramen hunters in Japan carry personal stickers to give to shops they like. Did I remember to bring mine?

One torisoba, please. I had a bit of a motorcycle ride planned ahead of me, so eating too much was a concern. I won’t go into details, but eating a massive bowl of fatty ramen and then riding the KTM 990smt for hours can lead to mixed results. The ramen without any extras was just right.

As with many other toripaitan shops, Makotoya uses specialty chickens. In this case, Okumino chickens (奥美濃地鶏). These are a local breed descended from Gifu Jidori and Rhode Island Red breeds. They have nice, firm meat and a strong flavor (according to the official website). I can attest, this was a deep bowl full of chickeny goodness.

Parking out front for the motorcycle. Unfortunately, the other shops I wanted to visit in Gifu were closed the week I was there, so they remain to be crushed. See you next year!
