尾道ラーメン

I’m no stranger to ramen on the road. When adventuring by motorcycle on Japan’s extensive (and expensive) network of highways, you are given little choice when it comes to food. You see, you can’t actually leave the expressway to go eat. Well, you could, but you’d have to repay some of the toll, and the amount of time you’d waste could be substantial.

Enter the highway rest stop. Roughly every 10km is a parking area of variable size, sometimes with gas, sometimes with dining options. Sometimes with ramen.

On occasion, an actual shop will open a branch at a highway rest stop. In this case, though, it seems to be cafeteria style.

At the Asa service area, you can enjoy a nice bowl of onomichi style ramen. Heavy taste and heavy noodles is usually a feature of onomichi style, which originates from somewhere out near Hiroshima. Another component of this shoyu bowl is the addition of chunks of lard.

I can’t give an honest review of this bowl. I had been riding my motorcycle for about 14 hours straight at this point, and anything with salt and fat in it would have been wonderful. That being said, this ramen was wonderful.
