Shizuoka Prefecture isn’t far from Tokyo on the bullet train, but most people just pass through on their way to Kyoto or Osaka. Speaking as someone who lives in Japan, Shizuoka isn’t to be missed. Beautiful nature, Japan’s best craft beer scene, and some hidden gem ramen shops. Sasuke serves a solid bowl of fancy chicken ramen.

Fancy ramen? What does that even mean? I went with the popular tokusei kiwami soba (特製極そば). The soup is infused with umami-rich katsuo and konbu in a coffee siphon just before serving. Is this special, labor-intensive treatment worth the extra yen? This bowl costs 1400 yen, much higher than your average bowl of ramen.

If you see tokusei (特製) on a menu it means you’ll be getting all of the toppings. In this case, two kinds of pork chashu, one kind of chicken chashu, thick menma, and an egg are all served separately. You get another kind of pork chashu on top of the noodles. Tokusei indeed!

The broth is infused with umami from a coffee siphon before serving. The best coffee is made on the spot fresh, so why not make your ramen broth on the spot fresh. Makes sense. I think it is a bit of a gimmick, as only a couple of shops do this technique in Japan. Good broth though. Still, 1400 yen for this is pushing it.

I tried the side menu roast beef rice bowl as well. Yum.

Crushed it! The soup was light and easy to drink. I even dumped some of the rice from my roast beef bowl in for added enjoyment. It was a lot of food though.

The location near Kakegawa Station is far from anything, but the area is kind of nice. You have a castle and some nice-looking restaurants on the road leading up to said castle. It might be a nice spot to spend an afternoon. I wouldn’t know, as I hopped on the train and headed back to Shizuoka City the minute I finished my bowl.
