A recommendation from a regular at one of my regular bars. It was no surprise that Koshi’s walls are covered with Japanese sake labels. Be prepared to imbibe.

Nice menu! Both the beer-of-the-day and otsumami, drink snacks, listings were written on discardable post-it notes.

What followed was plate after plate of heavily flavored snacks. A pile of pork parts and pickles came with our beers.

Despite the とりあえずビール, we came here to drink nihonshu, Japanese sake.

The master is an absolute character. He stocks the fridge in back with dozens of bottles, and is quite knowledgeable about Japan’s national drink.

Otsumami was matched well. While beer goes well with larger bites, sake is often paired with more… pungent fare.

Don’t knock it until you have tried it. I tried it, and wholeheartedly knock it.

Of course, the night is easily ended with ramen.

The wontonmen is an easy going bowl filled with wontons made fresh on the spot. Recommended for everyday eats. The soup is fairly light, and a welcome change to the previous flavors.

The special ramen though, was something I’d never tried before. A sake infused broth is topped with a massive hunk of butter. Very interesting. Though I would recommend the wontonmen, go with a friend and order one of each. Eating a bowl of ramen that reeks of booze is a memorable experience.
