中華そば 半ざわ

When hitting up a new ramen shop, do you always try the standard bowl? Or do you go for something limited and exciting? At Hanazawa I went for the latter and was happy I did. Clean clam ramen with wontons to die for. See you in Sugamo!

Right near the intersection of the 17 and the 17. If you are confused, don’t be. Japan labels some streets, but the almighty number is the only thing that matters. Just north of Sugamo Station is all you need to know.

The shop’s standard shoyu and shio ramen all looked great, but the hot summer days in sweltering Tokyo require a cold bowl. Their limited bowl of the season was made with a clam dashi broth and some big fat wontons. This shop is well known for its limited bowls, so you might just want to roll the dice. The first Sunday of the month, 半ざわの日, has special limited bowls each time.

Very refreshing. The wontons were the highlight and should be added to any bowl regardless of the limited status or not. Noodles come from the famous Shirakawa noodle maker Kikuchu (菊忠) in Fukushima. It’s a noodle maker with over 60 years of history.

There is some kind of members system in place. I’m not sure how it works, but you’ll get a free topping at Hanzawa, Fukumen Tomo, and Fukumen Hanaki with your member card. Actually, as I write this, I realize that I acquired the member card at Tomo many years ago . . . I just forgot where I left it.
