めだかTANTAN

Medaka Tantan is a mildly ranked shop out past Tachikawa Station in the western reaches of Tokyo.

Mildly ranked shops are shops I tend not to visit as Tokyo is full of highly ranked shops. Medaka, though, was given a spot on the 2019 Tabelog Top 100 list. As I was trying to complete the list, I had to go.

Not my cup of tantanmen, to be honest.

Tantanmen divides people more than the average bowl of noodles. Many people love the cheap, firey dandanmien Chinese style. Others love the less spicy Japanese way of making the dish with an umami-rich soup. Others still want it as creamy as possible, with sesame and other nuts blended into the broth.

For me this one was just a bit underwhelming. For the record, I want my tantan more like dandan. Bring on the heat!

The boiled dumplings with homemade rayu hot sauce were very nice. I think I would have enjoyed this sauce in copious amounts drizzled on the tantanmen.

I’m not sure the story, but there are Gundam things everywhere in the store. Figures, posters, and toys.

Are there any references to ramen, let alone food in the Gundam universe?

I should have asked.
